A Roundtable Discussion with Young Adults in Indianapolis

On Saturday, May 14, 2011, MCCOY hosted 24 youth in a roundtable discussion about issues that are facing them here in central Indiana. The goal was to find ways to get youth involved in creating solutions to these important issues. Here is what they had to say:

Top Three Issues of Concern:

1.  Education - Impact of reform, immigration, career and life preparation, and rising cost of college tuition

2.  Violence - Impact and causes of gangs and bullying, and existing resources to help

3.  Economy - Lack of jobs, high gas prices, lack of affordable housing, and affordable health care

What can Youth Do:

  • Educate other youth and adults
  • Create stronger youth voice
  • Create partnerships

Who Should Youth Talk To?:

  • School principals/administration
  • Other youth
  • Government officials
  • Parents
  • Media
  • Community Leaders

What Tactics can Youth Use?:

  • Lobby, testify, and talk to legislators
  • Write letters, phone calls and emails to decision-makers
  • Invite legislators and administrators to youth advocacy meetings
  • Use the media positively
